BEAVER

IT’S TIME FOR

BEAVER (CASTOR FIBER)

River beaver (Castor fiber) is a member of the beaver (Castoridae) family, the largest rodent in Lithuania, weighing 20-26 kg. In the past, river beavers were common throughout most of Eurasia, but have largely disappeared due to hunting (mainly for their fur, but also for their fur (secretions from the musk glands), which are believed to have medicinal properties) and habitat loss. 19th century beavers were almost completely extinct, with an estimated 1,300 individuals left in the wild. 20th century Ave. beaver populations were preserved only in parts of the Rhône, Elbe, Nemunas, Dnieper, and Voronezh river basins in southern Norway.
Reintroduced in many places after World War II. Now common in France, Germany, Poland, southern Scandinavia, central Russia and elsewhere in Europe,[3] with the exception of Portugal, Italy, the southern Balkans and the United Kingdom. A small isolated population remains in southwestern Mongolia, in the Bulgan River basin.
