MOOSE

IT’S TIME FOR

MOOSE (ALCES ALCES)

Moose (Alces alces) is a large mammal of the deer (Cervidae) family. European moose (Alces alces alces) is widespread in Lithuania. They live in deciduous and mixed forests, swamps, in winter - in young pine groves. In summer, they feed on grass, in winter - on the bark of bushes and trees. The back, sides and chest are dark brown in summer, the belly, lower and inner parts of the legs are white. In winter, the coat is a little lighter, grayer. The muzzle is humped. A 20-30 cm long fold of skin covered with long hair hangs on the chin - a "beard", which decreases as the moose ages.
Males weigh more than 550 kg, females about 400 kg.
