European mouflon (Ovis orientalis musimon) is a one-horned animal of the Artiodactyla order of mammals. Some systematists consider it an independent species (Ovis musimon). Widespread on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia.
European mouflons were brought to Lithuania in 1977. from Askania Nova reserve (Kherson region, Ukraine). in 1977 from the then Czechoslovakia. Weighs 47 (35-58) kg, similar to a sheep, only taller, leaner, with longer legs, larger curled horns. Yellowish or brownish brown in summer, and brownish gray or brownish brown in winter. In winter, males have two white saddle-shaped spots on the sides of their backs. The top of the muzzle, the cheeks, the inner side of the ears, the lower part of the legs, the belly and the mirror and the hair around the eyes are white. As the animal ages, the white spots on the fur expand. All males and only about 5 percent have horns. of females. The horns of the latter are smaller. Horns grow throughout life, but with age - more slowly, they can lose more than they grow. In the months of November-December, the horns do not grow, and a deep annual furrow forms at their base. In January, the antlers start growing again. Lives in mixed forests. In Lithuania, they are kept in aviaries in the forest. Active throughout the year.
